An extra item for your notebook....

Hey guys,

It would be awesome if some people can bring in some of the tabs on the link below. As we move into new topics, it will really help to have tabs for each subject! I'd love it if everyone could bring a pack for the classroom so we can all share.

This is an amazon link. I'm sure target has some too!!

Week 5: Ecosystems and Dynamic Equilibrium

CLE 3210.2.1 Investigate how the dynamic equilibrium of an ecological community is associated with interactions among its organisms. CLE 3210.3.1 Analyze the flow of energy through an ecosystem

Guiding Question: What impact does energy have on an ecosystem and how does this affect the organisms within it?

Monday: LABOR DAY; NO SCHOOL

Tuesday: Vocab/ Energy Systems
Please watch this video about dynamic equilibrium before coming to class on tuesday. Make sure you can answer these questions found at this link

Wednesday: Organism Interaction
(This is picture day. You are expected to come to class as usual. But, be sure to say HI to Mr. Kannady when you get your picture taken!)

Thursday: Ecological Communities
Please watch this video before coming to class on Thursday. Make sure you can describe each of the titles of the table of contents seen at the end of the video...

Friday:Quiz Day!

Strategies: Group work, interactive lessons, video lessons (pre-teaching)

Assessment: Multiple Choice Quiz over material covered

PowerPoint on Graphing

Everyone, please feel free to bookmark this information and refer back to it as often as you need to. I am concerned that we are in week 4 and you are not commenting and talking to each other. Part of the success of a science class is that you are talking to your peers, thinking and sharing. It may seem silly or feel weird, but it will lead you to success. The more that you all share with each other the more successful you will be in my class. This is a class that depends on you THINKING and using the skills and information to apply and build them into MORE.

***You should have started on your project by now. September 10 will be our halfway point and you will have that class period to work with your project in class. If you have questions post them on the this post. You all have to talk to each other!!! If you have questions or ideas post them on the post as a comment so that you can both share.

Today's Lesson...

Today we finished all the vocabulary that goes with Scientific Method.

This information is going to be tested on friday, August 29. After that, I will use this information throughout our class and I will expect you to understand and be familiar and comfortable with using this information.

3 Mathematical Tools of Research:
1. Mean: the average of a controlled data set

2. Median: the middle number of a controlled data set when the numbers are listed in numerical order from least to greatest.
Found one of 2 ways:
Odd numbers in a data set: Middle number of the controlled data set when the numbers are listed in numerical order from least to greatest
Even numbers in a data set: The middle 2 numbers of the controlled data set when the numbers are listed in numerical order from least to greatest are averaged.

3. Mode: The number seen most frequently in a controlled data set

Control Group:
The group in the experiment used for comparison

Experimental Group:
The group exposed to the factor being tested

Independent variable:
The tested factor of an experiment

Dependent variable:
the factor being measured as a result of changes to the independent variable

Data:
information gathered from observations

Qualitative data:
a description of what your senses detect, this includes your emotions

Quantitative data:
any numerical data collected that can be measured

Project Instructions

Part 1: due September 26th at the start of class

Instructions:
Use 1 8.5x11 piece of paper folded into thirds like a brochure.

For each section do the following to your best ability!!!

Front:
1. Animals
2. Plants
3. Qualitative and quantitative information about your ecosystem. Minimum of 4 each.

Back:
1. Interesting facts. Minimum of 4.
2. About the author.
3. Title section!!

Make it awesome and colorful and amazing!!! Reach for the stars!!! Demonstrate your creativity and excitement!!

Part 2:
Due dates: September 22-26 (we'll draw dates in class next week)

Week 4: qualitative and quantitative methods

This week you will get instructions on your first project!!! Don't worry, you'll have plenty of time to do it!!

We will learn about qualitative and quantitative research methods and you will have another quiz on Friday over these methods.

It is important that you bring your composition book EVERYDAY!!!

If you have any questions email me at kannadyr@gmail.com, text me at 901-647-8319 or stop by my room!
