Mendelian Genetics

I have to miss again. I am soooo sorry. I am now sick too!

Here's the link to the power point that is being shown in class today. I bolded the things you need for the test. The quiz will be only on meiosis. The things on the SPI review sheet are the things that will be covered on the quiz.

The medelian worksheet can be found here. It should be turned in for a classwork grade. If you want to work in partners you may at a LEVEL 1 voice. You still must turn in your own work.

If you have questions, or you find a video that goes great with this, drop me a line and let me know.

Quick Update

Ok, a few housekeeping things...

1. Grades: Grades are going into the computer as fast as my little fingers can work...sorry I am not as fast as some would like. If you have a question about your grades, remember you can come after school to talk about them. We can't talk grades during class, it is disrespectful to you and your classmates.

2. Quizzes...very few of you have retaken quizzes, this will really help many of you in the grade department!!!

3. Questions....ask them! Lots of them! Post on the blog in the comments...answer each other! Start talking!!!

4. Quiz tomorrow. Please take time to study for it! The more you do now, the less you have to do later.

5. Homework....if you ahven't done this week's homework assignments, please do those first. Then do Chapter 7, then do Chapter 6. Try to stay current.

6. Test...dang scantron machine! I am hopefully going to be able to run the scantrons tomorrow... Cross your fingers!!!

7. Love and Respect. Guys, I have said it so many times it sounds silly, but I a mean it. I love all of you guys so much! You are all such amazing kids and I am so honored to get to call you all my school kids. I have the utmost respect for the work that you are undertaking with me and the fact that I really have not had much trouble from any of you (except for a few special moments). It makes the whole thing that much more enjoyable and honorable.

Keep up the great work and let's keep working towards 100% mastery! It's a long journey, but we're almost 1/4 of the way done! You can do it!!!!

Mrs. K

Aerobic and Anaerobic Respiration

SPI 3210.3.2: Construct a concept map to differentiate between aerobic and anaerobic respiration

Your quiz for this will be different from normal. You will have a concept map. There will be items missing and the box will have a number in it. Each number will have four choices of something that could go in the box. In class on Wednesday we will create a concept map to demonstrate the concept. A DIFFERENT concept map will be used to evaluate your understanding of the similarities and differences of aerobic and anaerobic respiration.

Pages in the book: 231-232

Vocabulary:
Aerobic respiration
Aerobic process
Anaerobic respiration
Fermentation
Lactic acid fermentation
Alcohol fermentation
Photosynthesis

Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration QUIZ

Write down your answers to the quiz on a separate sheet of paper.

At the top of your paper please write "Quiz 3210.3.3"

There are 10 questions. You may use your book, but the answer is not written in your book. This will require you to think critically about our discussion today (or yesterday, thanks to block schedule) and the information you have access to regarding photosynthesis and cellular respiration. This information is imperative that you understand. If you do not understand this, please let me know and either come to tutoring or let's find a way to solve this. I am here to help you, but I can't help if I don't know you need help. You have until Thursday to turn this in. This post will be deleted Thursday night after school.

1. A plant is in a shady area of a yard. It's leaves are still green. How is the cell able to carry on photosynthesis in the lack of sunlight?
a. The plant has stored sunlight in order to carry out photosynthesis.
b. The sun has only recently gone down and so the plant cells can continue the process of photosynthesis.
c. This cell participates in an alternative pathway, either CAM or C4.
d. Both b and c are plausible answers.

a. sunlight
b. carbon dioxide
c. oxygen
d. water

3. Cellular Respiration occurs in the mitochondria of the cell. What happens to the water that is produced in the process of cellular respiration?
a. it is disposed of as a waste product
b. it is used by the cell
c. both a and b are correct
d. neither a nor b are correct

4. Some of the light energy that is gathered by chlorophylls is stored in the form of what?

a. CO2
b. H2O
c. C6H12O6
d. O2

a. Where a cell processes oxygen
b. When a cell processes oxygen
c. if a cell processes oxygen
d. both a and c are correct

7. What is the total production of ATP during cellular respiration?

Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration: a Comparison

Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration are inverse reactions of each other.

They are opposites.

Photosynthesis
Phase 1 (light dependent reaction)
Begins with light energy (sunlight)
Light energy triggers the breakdown of water and carbon dioxide into ATP and NADPH
This process is called the Light Dependent Reaction, also known as, Phase 1

Phase 2 is known as the Calvin Cycle
the ATP and NADPH made in Phase 1 will be used to make glucose and Oxygen
The glucose will be used by the cell as energy or the basis for other larger molecules in the cell
The oxygen will be released into the atmosphere as waste

Photosynthesis is an anaerobic process. That means it DOES NOT require oxygen

Cellular Respiration
Cellular Respiration has two parts; glycolysis and the Krebs cycle

Glycolysis
When the cell breaks down glucose it makes two molecules of ATP and two molecules NADH for one glucose molecule
This allows the cell to take the energy (ATP) out of the glucose and begin the process of creating Carbon Dioxide waste
Glycolysis begins with an inhale

Kreb Cycle
In the presence of oxygen, the Kreb cycle will transport pyruvate and convert it into carbon dioxide waste
This cycle will create 2 molecules of carbon dioxide and 1 molecule of ATP
This cycle is also referred to as the citric acid cycle
Kreb Cycle ends with an exhale

Cellular Respiration is an aerobic process. That means it DOES require oxygen.
